Hi all
Has anyone done, or got an ideas on how to put a 5ft fence on top of gabion walling, would assume concrete around posts but my luck, the posts will fall on a joint etc anyone have any other ideas.

Sounds tricky to me. I can't see a way you could found a post in what are essentially loose rocks without it moving around when the rocks move - which they inevitably will with wind loading etc.

If the posts went in before the stone I don't see a problem if the stones are small enough to be a tight fit.
retrofitting a fence. ahhh no.

Just for the record I assumed the gabion is already built. I agree it might be possible to fit a post deep into a gabion as it's built.

No wall not yet built, looking as a possible option on a property I am considering buying, just weighing up possible solutions at the moment and wondered if anyone had any experience of doing it. Cheers

Easy peasy. Shutter around the base of post with a 'pyramid' of plywood. Weigh or tie it down. Fill with concrete. When you add the stone you should be able to hide the pyramid.

Or metpost socket through a thick heavy duty paving slab, and use the stone fill to weigh it down. You will have to mark and carefully drill through the slabs for the bolt holes, and use big washers on the underside, coach bolting from below. Bed it all down on a layer or mortar to get level and stop the bolt heads from making it 'wobbly'

Or fix lengths of 6x2 to the posts in alternate directions, inside the gabion, to provide more resistance to 'dragging' though the stone. Once the stone is added it should all lock into place, provided it's well compacted.

Imagine this sign post upside down.

the only way I have seen this done is to put 110mm pipe into the gabion beore they are filled with stone. then the posts go in and back filled with conc.

Doesn't seem worth the hassle for just a 110mm pipe filled with crete. Can't see it being heavy or wide enough to resist a strong wind any more than sticking the post in by itself.

depends on how large the gabions are and you have the bonding to the conc.? I think the main advantage is that the pipes dont get in the way during construction like a post would.
