What Lies Beyond the Fence is a great action novel and contains memorable characters. (I especially loved Harry Bronson's dry sense of humor).

The stakes are continually raised as Harry Bronson searchers for two runaway kids from a strange community located completely off the grid. From wolves to menacing elders...this book packs a punch!

I’ll have to confess, I may have a crush on Harry Bronson. He’s one of the good guys, a retired detective you’d want on your side in a bad situation. I picked up What Lies Beyond the Fence intending to take a quick peek, and read it later. I couldn’t put it down.

This is the first book in this series that I have read. This book can definitely be read as a standalone. However, after reading this one I’m more than curious about not only the other books in this series as well as other books by this author.

WHAT LIES BEYOND THE FENCE is a very well written book that grabs you from page one and keeps you turning the pages not only to see if the good guys win out but to see the “how” it’s done especially when things appear to be so hopeless at times.

It’s the story of Harry Bronson, retired detective, being asked a favor by Detective Joe Randig of the Pittsburgh police force to go to Eric’s Landing, location unknown, to help some young teenagers from getting into some serious trouble and to check on and give a message to his granddaughter, Norma Orr Karsteter. He hasn’t seen her since his daughter died three years ago. The Elders of Eric’s Landing asked for Joe’s help since they knew of his police connections through his son-in-law, Chris Karsteter. Not wanting to jeopardize his upcoming retirement with involvement, he approached Harry thinking it was a simple go up and put the fear of prison in the teens.

Bronson having felt he failed his sister in a time when she really needed him, wanted to take the job without a second thought – other than for his wife and having to leave her alone. After some time with friends, Mike Hoover, Bronson’s ex-partner from the Dallas Police Department, and Mike’s ex-wife, Ellen Biebesheimer, who they thought of as a sister, Bronson’s wife, Carol gave her blessing for him to go with the words – be careful and stay safe.

Ellen was leaving for a cruise for 3 months to try to get away from it all and to relax. Mike was headed back to Dallas hoping his 2 years until retirement would fly by so that he and Ellen could become true husband and wife again. Carol was going with the new camper to get to know her new nephew. Bronson was off to help two wayward teens get back on the straight and narrow. However, it became apparent very fast that everything wasn’t as it seemed.

After Bronson is picked up by Everett from Eric’s Landing, he realizes to late that the coffee he had been offered was drugged. He ends up in a place he has no idea where is, stripped of any form of equipment or protection, learns that Eric’s Landing is more of a prison than a religious retreat, and finds out the whole situation with the wayward teens wasn’t as he thought. He has to learn who he can trust and who to help as well as a way to save Ellen, who was kidnapped by the Elders to force Bronson to find the teens and the missing book and turn them both over to them.

WHAT LIES BEYOND THE FENCE is a story of suspense, adventure, intrigue, human trafficking, love, devotion, dedication to right and wrong, trust, honor and learning that knowledge doesn’t have to come with age and that some youth see and experience things way beyond their age. It’s a book that I loved reading. It definitely keeps you on your toes and turning the pages with an ending you couldn’t predict but works amazingly well.

I absolutely love that the character of the teenage boy, Roger Cobb Hallberg was written in honor of S/Sgt. Roger Cobb Hallberg, US Army Special Services who went missing in 1967 in Viet Nam. This was done by the author as part of a fund raiser for the MIA/POW annual fundraiser.

My advice is to read this book. You won’t be disappointed

Because he could not compromise his job due to retirement approaching, he thought maybe Bronson could help him out. With no hatred, or crime in the town ever, till now – there should not be any danger to Bronson should he decide to help. After getting some more of the details from one of the Elders of the town, and talking it over with Carol, he decided to go... Now for the odd part, no one knows where this town is, and Bronson will be in the dark of a camper, while they approach. Here we go, and the mystery begins….

What did I like? Everyone loves a good mystery, and I have to say that Elsie knows how to do that with flair! Not long ago I read my first Harry Bronson mystery, “When Memory Fails”, it was great! I knew from that one that I loved her writing style, so I looked forward to reading this one, and she did not let me down! If it is possible, this one is even better. All the action is kicked up and the mystery level is out of sight!!

What will you like? The extraordinary storyline, that grips on page one and just keeps getting better and better, the incredible mystery is of the highest level, inconceivable secrets, and amazing intrigue. The plot is deep and concerning with an age-old problem that is twisted and appalling! Characters are unique and some are downright wicked and mysterious. The details and descriptions are so incredible that you will feel the wind on your face and the taste of the coffee that Harry so loves, with all that sugar. (Yuck) An exciting read with an unexpected ending that will warm your heart!

I enjoyed this book but found it slightly predictable. I also don't like how the main character, Bronson, talks sometimes. His phrases and way of talking "dumbs him down", in my opinion. I like a stronger more confident male lead.

This was my first introduction to Harry Bronson and I'm glad I've found him and his crew. The story was fast paced and kept me turning the pages until the end. Great plot, well developed with characters I want to know better. I will definitely read more of this series.
